What is private medical insurance?

Private Medical Insurance or PMI is also sometimes referred to as private health insurance or private health care.

PMI covers a range of medical procedures and treatments, including consultations, tests, surgery, hospital stays, and therapies. The level of coverage and the cost of the policy will depend on factors such as the individual’s age, health status, and chosen level of cover.

Quite simply private medical insurance (PMI) – is an insurance policy that covers the cost of private medical care should you become ill. It compliments health care and treatment which might be available from the NHS. It usually provides you with access to shorter wait times, a choice of where you receive treatment and also provides treatments, medication and surgery that may not be provided by the NHS.

Who can buy PMI?

Private medical insurance policies can be purchased by individuals, families, or businesses for their employees. Some employers offer PMI as part of their employee benefits package.

Do I need private medical insurance?

You will generally be entitled to free healthcare from the NHS should you become unwell. We pose a simple question – Is the monthly cost worthwhile for you?

Having private medical insurance can provide peace of mind that you can access the medical care you need quickly and conveniently without having to rely solely on the NHS. However, it is important to note that PMI does not guarantee access to all medical treatments and there may be exclusions or limits to the coverage provided.

What does PMI cover?

PMI is designed to cover the cost of private medical treatment for ‘acute conditions’ that start after your policy begins. You pay a monthly sum to the insurer, then it pays for certain private treatment you may need during the policy, such as consultations or surgery.

Policies are generally built from ‘Core’ cover. The more basic policies usually pick up the costs of most in-patient treatments – such as diagnostic tests and day-care surgery.

Out-patient treatments of acute conditions – such as specialist tests and consultations – are usually included. There are options to place a limit on the cover provided or opt for ‘unlimited’ cover.

There are several benefits that can be added to enhance the cover provided, such as some GP referred services and Dental/Optical cover. There are also options available to reduce the cost of the cover including excess options and hospital lists.

Private Medical Insurance plans can offer impressive routes to clinical treatment pathways, for example for musculoskeletal or mental health treatment. Insurers often include a comprehensive range of added support services as part of the plan such as;

  • Digital private GP appointments
  • Counselling/support resources
  • Second Medical Opinion
  • Nutrition and fitness programs.
